Preserving a Critical Watershed
a catalyst for great change
On
June 9, 2010 The Land Conservancy of New Jersey partnered with
The Trust for Public Land, Mount Olive Township, Morris County
and the State of New Jersey to purchase the 135-acre former
Rezamir Estates property. Construction of 16 homes had begun on
this sensitive site resulting in the destruction of wetlands,
the diversion and siltation of streams, the fragmentation of a
healthy mature interior forest, and the disruption of the
property’s hydrology. Immediately upon closing The Land
Conservancy of New Jersey assumed ownership and began restoring
the site, making the property the centerpiece of our South
Branch Preserve.
Preserving this site was critical because it lies within the
headwaters of the South Branch of the Raritan River, a drinking
water source for more than 1 million New Jersey residents. The
Able property is the second to be added to the South Branch
Preserve and the 300th property preserved by The Land
Conservancy! Our Board of Trustees envisions the South Branch
Preserve will one day encompass 1,000 acres including two miles
of the South Branch of the Raritan River, protecting one of New
Jersey’s critical watersheds.
The May 26th tour will show the great progress that
has been made in restoring the once blighted Rezamir site, the
first restoration of a residential subdivision ever accomplished
in New Jersey! As a result, the springs and streams on the
property are once again flowing unimpeded, carrying clean
drinking water downstream to residents and businesses. Detention
basins have been filled in and 14 vernal pools have been created
in their place, providing outstanding new wildlife habitat.
