Partners For Parks
Information sheet for the volunteer coordinator
Date:
The volunteer leader will coordinate the day
and date of the actual project with the Conservancy
Place:
The Conservancy will choose the location and
make arrangements with the park manager
Time:
As agreed upon – usually 9am to approximately
3pm
Directions & Parking:
will provide detailed
directions and parking location for work site
Facilities:
The Conservancy will note the location
of nearest restrooms / phones
Activities:
The Conservancy will arrange the site
activity with the park manager. On the project day the
work is supervised by The Land Conservancy's stewardship
staff and by the park staff. The volunteers at each site
are instructed not only as to what they are to do but why
the work is being performed, be it for streamside
protection, park beautification, refurbishment, safety, or
accessibility. Volunteers will receive proper instruction
for using tools and other safety tips the morning of the
project. Activities we have done in the past include:
maintaining and blazing trails; building fences and walks;
restoring river and reservoir banks; planting and weeding
gardens; removing non-native plants; grooming historical
properties.
Dress:
Volunteers are advised to wear appropriate
clothing for working outdoors – long pants, long sleeves,
layered clothing for weather, hiking or work boots,
high/calf socks, hat (optional). PROPER FOOTWEAR IS
ESSENTIAL. (some areas may be wet)
What to bring:
Bottled water, work gloves
(preferably leather), insect repellent, sun screen.
(volunteers may borrow leather work gloves from the
Conservancy, if needed)
All tools will be provided.
Lunch:
There will be a break for your group to
lunch together at the work site. You can order lunch ahead
and have it delivered, or order that day and send someone
to pick it up. Some groups have the company’s cafeteria
make up lunches.
The best place to have lunch is at the work site - the
locations are attractive and make lovely picnic areas. We
give a long break to enjoy lunch together and we find
seating that is comfortable. Often there are not tables
but you can bring folding chairs and blankets, or we find
“natural” seats such as fallen trees, etc. It is best NOT
to leave the site for lunch as it breaks up the group and
the flow of the day.
Weather Policy:
We take a positive approach and say
that the project is on unless the weather will be
uncomfortable for the volunteers. The judgment will be
made (as best we can) 24 hours ahead by agreement between
the volunteer leader and the Conservancy. If a rain date
can be set, that would be advisable. Otherwise we will do
our best to accommodate your group and try not to have to
reschedule.
Prior to the Project Day the Volunteer Leader will
receive a customized project sheet with detailed worksite
information to be conveyed to volunteers via email, etc.
