2022 Scholarship Winner: Sumbel Yaqoob

Kate Munning

We are thrilled to continue featuring the winners of TLCNJ’s 2022 scholarships! This year we were able to give FIVE awards out to some impressive young people who are working hard to shape the future of conservation in New Jersey.

Sumbel Yaqoob is a graduate student in chemistry and environmental science at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. She is currently researching the biotransformation and biodefluorination of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) as a means to break down toxic soil and groundwater pollutants. She hopes to utilize microbial techniques in the remediation of PFAS-impacted sites by harnessing nature’s own remediative potential, thereby protecting natural resources in a sustainable way. Talk about fascinating, forward-thinking solution!

Congratulations, Sumbel!

We are deeply humbled to occupy the land of the native Munsee Lenape.

The Land Conservancy of New Jersey acknowledges Indigenous Peoples as the traditional stewards of the land, and the enduring relationship that exists between them and their traditional territories. The land on which our headquarters sit is the traditional unceded territory of the Munsee Lenape Nation. We also work to preserve land in the traditional territories of the Lenape Haki-nk (Lenni-Lenape) and the Ramapough Lenape Nation.
